SEREMBAN: The parents of a 13-month-old “heavyweight” baby have been advised to restrict his diet to infant formula while doctors at several hospitals are continuing to check on his condition.
Yesterday, when Kyairiel Mikhail was brought from his house in Tampin, Negri Sembilan, to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (KLH) for a check-up, his weight had surprisingly gone up by 200gm to 17.8kg within days.
The boy’s 25-year-old mother, Yusnurlina Mohd Yusof, said a dietician had advised her to change the brand of baby formula he had been taking since birth to one that was more suitable for his age and needs.
“We are extremely worried as his weight is on the increase again. We hope doctors can give us a diagnosis soon as his lungs, heart, kidneys and vision could be affected if this continues,” she said, adding that doctors said the regular weight of a baby his age was usually about 10kg.
Yusnurlina said specialists at KLH had also asked them to have their son admitted at the hospital in April to allow them to monitor his sleep patterns.
“Kyairiel snores heavily while asleep and the doctors are worried as this could be signs of deteriorating health,” she added.
The boy is also due for admission at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital here on Feb 18 as doctors would be performing MRI and CT scans to find out more about his abnormal growth.
Next month, the youngest of three siblings has an appointment with an ophthalmologist at the Malacca Hospital to determine if his abnormal weight has impaired his vision as he hardly responds to his parents.
Kyairiel Mikhail, who was born healthy at 2.7kg at birth, has two older siblings aged five and three who are both normal.
Yusnurlina said that since doctors were unable to diagnose Kyairiel Mikhail’s condition, they had not put him on any medication.
“We have been asked to continue with his twice weekly therapy sessions at the Tampin Hospital to strengthen his neck muscles and limbs since he is unable to move them on his own,” she said.
Yusnurlina, who weighs 42kg, and her 27-year-old husband, Khairul Syafiq, who is 52kg, have also sought help from several traditional healers to treat their son, but their efforts have been unsuccessful.
